“Legal Lowdown: Fundamentals for Scholarship Providers” was the topic of Karen Leaffer Schauble’s presentation at the National Scholarship Providers Association’s annual conference. Her session guided private foundations, community foundations, public charities and other organizations thinking about starting a scholarship program. She presented on key tax considerations and compliance issues, including donor participation in the scholarship process, use of donor advised funds, other options for establishing a scholarship fund, the requirement (or not) of a scholarship plan, tax reporting and withholding obligations, and document retention.
Also presenting at the conference was IP attorney and Schauble Law Group guest blogger Deborah Howitt Shinbein who addressed legal issues in the collection and retention of student data.
